Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) required a brand new website with a completely redesigned look and feel from their previous site. The goal was to establish them as the leading global provider of data on displaced people. Therefore, instead of a site refresh, we started anew, completely rebuilding the site from the ground up. In addition to the new design, the website included support for live data fed from IDMC’s API and hundreds of pages of content.

  • The development solution

We developed the new IDMC website in Drupal 8, which includes an easy to use admin system incorporating user role management, flexible and robust content creation tools and file/media management functionality. The new responsive design provides an engaging experience across all devices and social media integration encourages content sharing, especially from the blog.

Additionally, we created an extensive online resource library with advanced search functionality to allow users to access digital documents, videos and infographics. This included user-centric navigation, designed to aid the varying user journeys of different audience types, based on a robust information architecture.

We developed a custom module in order to allow the site to pull and display data from IDMC’s internal displacement database API. This gives the site admin the ability to create and display graphs across the site with ease.

  • The design solution

IDMC wanted a more elegant and subdued design for the new website, so we went with an intentionally restrained colour palette and monochromatic imagery. The restricted and calculated use of accent colours reinforces IDMC’s authoritative image. The clean and simple design helps users focus on the content while presenting it clearly and precisely.

We worked through a few completely different design routes before arriving at the final design which fits the client’s needs. This project was as much an exercise in brand development and redevelopment as it was in technical development.
